Strange Pickup Issue

I have covered humbuckers and I decided to adjust the pole pieces to compensate for bridge tilt and fretboard radius. The end result has the outer two screws with just the head protruding from the PU with the middle screws sticking out somewhat further.

The balance seems good and the sound is good. However, since I did that, no matter what tuner I plug into, I can't get a solid, constant signal. It bounces all over the place and makes tuning difficult. I've tried lowering the pickups as well as raising them, to no avail. Does having the screws protruding from the cover more than a couple turns make the signal different somehow, that could cause this?

Re: Strange Pickup Issue

I think the tuner needs a new battery. Try it out, see if it makes a difference.

Re: Strange Pickup Issue

maybe magnet pull? Some pole screws may be TOO close, causing "wolftones"?

Re: Strange Pickup Issue

You are tuning using the neck pickup, right?

Actually I generally tune with the bridge pickup...it seems to put out more signal the way they're adjusted.

Re: Strange Pickup Issue

Sounds like the pickups are causing too much pull on the strings , try lowering the pickup a bit.

Re: Strange Pickup Issue

Tune with the neck pickup, not the bridge. The neck has more of the fundamental note and less overtones, the bridge has more overtones.
