So I've decided to build a pedalboard....

I had been eying some of Pumaman's custom pedalboards lately (very spiffy btw,) but I didn't wanna drop the $300+ dollars on the one I would've wanted, so I've taken it upon myself to just build one from scratch! I went by Lowe's today and picked up the things that I need to get started (I'm sure I'll end up making more trips,) and I'm thinkin' I'll be able to get by at least a couple hundred bucks cheaper! The reason I'm posting is to see if any fellow MLPers have gone this route before, and if so what advice would you give me?? I'm pretty much set on just staining the wood a to match my guitar (see avatar,) since I don't really gig other than church stuff. I'm planning on ordering some neutrik jacks and wiring the it up w/George L's cables eventually. Anyhow....let me know if you've got any tips! I'll post some pics once I get this little project going/finished!

Re: So I've decided to build a pedalboard....

I am actually finishing one up right now. Mine is based on the Pumaboards type also. I also used Lowe's for most of my stuff. I covered it with Blonde Tolex to match my amp. I built in its own power into the base and plugged in a BBE Supa Charger power supply for the pedals. I chose not to install jacks into the base just because it is more wire and soldering to go bad or suck tone. I used 3/4 select pine for the base with a 1/2 inch oak plywood for the top. The top work space is 24X16. I covered it with industrial grade Velcro. I added a black Marshall type amp handle to carry it around with and 4 rubber feet. I got the feet at Home Depot. The underside is covered with a piece of 1/4 inch oak plywood that I stained to complement the tolex. The AC inlet is a IEC type, they are mostly found in computer supplys. It has a detachable power cord. So far it looks really good. I am waiting for the Piping to come in. I am trimming the top board in white piping. I will post the pictures in detail when the piping comes in. The only thing I am having trouble finding is black corner covers. If you need any advice or have any questions please ask.

Re: So I've decided to build a pedalboard....

That looks freakin' awesome man! I'm basing mine on the "classic" style to give a little bit of an angle so it'll be easier to stomp on the the three rows of pedals that I'll be running EVENTUALLY! At the moment all I have is the 5 button footswitch for my Gibson Super Goldtone, a BBE Boosta Grande, Petersen Strobostomp Tuner, along w/a Boss CE-3 Chorus and a BBE Two Timer Delay to go in the effects loop. Over the next couple of months I'll hopefully be adding a wah and/or volume along with maybe a MXR Phase 90, BBE Soul Vibe (love the rotary speaker sound,) and who knows what else!? I'll probably end up getting some sort of dirt pedal just to have another flavor of OD (my amp has a "boost" and along w/the Boosta Grande I can go from crunch to face melting sustain!)

As far as materials go, I decided to go with 3/4" Birch for everything. I really like the grain of the pieces of wood that I picked out. For that reason (along w/the fact that I've never fooled with tolex whatsoever) I think I'm just gonna stain it to match my Les Paul. Hopefully it'll turn out half as nice as what you've got going on! I sent Pumaman an e-mail to see where I could get the round recessed power sockets that he uses on his late last night, so hopefully, he'll share that secret with me! I was able to find the Neutrik jacks at Fullcompass.com. I ordered 4 and everything I'll need to install them and all that stuff set me back $40 some dollars, which will probably be the biggest "expense" for the whole board. Haven't decided if I wanna cover the top w/velcro or formica. The surface area is gonna be 18" deep x 27" wide, so formica might be a bit pricey?? Don't really know. I'm hoping to get a little work done on it today, which means I'll probably be back later w/a ton of questions! Thanks for the tips so far! I'm sure I'll need more advice in the near future!

Re: So I've decided to build a pedalboard....

I am using a different AC inlet. Not the one that Puma uses. I could not find that type in black so I went with a different type. I still might add the Neutrik jacks. I would need 1 in and 2 out. Not sure about that yet. Good luck ISO it really is easy to build. Mine is basically based on the classic also. It has a 4 1/4 inch rise in the front to 2 inch in the rear. It is a perfect slant.

See ya

Re: So I've decided to build a pedalboard....

Just to update, Pumaman sent me an e-mail back to let me know the model of the AC inlet, and like yourself, I couldn't find anywhere that had the black in stock either! I decided to just go w/white instead, which should look pretty cool seein' as how my Les Paul has white binding anyways! Hopefully I'll have ALL of the materials by the end of the week so I can get this thing put together! Right now I'm waiting on the Neutrik stuff and the AC power inlet, and I'm still thinking about getting some white piping to go around the perimeter of the board's surface! Which reminds me, I've gotta get some velcro to cover it the surface with! Where'd you get your velcro from geo?? Also....where from/what kind of "grommet" did you use for your cable routing?? I'm actually thinking about putting three of them along the top (out on left, power cables in center, and in on right.) I figure that they'll be pretty small holes, so it wouldn't take up too much space anyways. I'll get some pics up as I'm going through the process. I'm sure I'll be back very soon with more questions as well! Thanks again!

Re: So I've decided to build a pedalboard....

The Velcro I got off ebay from LYT Pedalboards. The piping I also got off ebay from Custom Amp Covers. The grommet I got from Lowes. It is a standard desk grommet size 1 3/4. That grommet is used to route the power cables up from under the board. The interconnect cables from pedal to pedal will be on top. I will use some velcro to fasten the cables down to the board just to keep things neat.

Re: So I've decided to build a pedalboard....

That's where I was thinking about getting the velcro from too. I just wasn't sure if there was a cheaper alternative out there. Looks like I'll be making another trip to Lowe's in the next couple of days as well (probably today!) I should probably make a list or something so I don't forget anything this time! Hopefully I can get the ball rolling on this thing soon! I am without a table saw, so I'm gonna have to run to a friend's house to cut the wood how I need it, then I'll finish it back here w/my brother's router. I'll keep y'all posted! Thanks again!

Re: So I've decided to build a pedalboard....

I'm gettin' so pumped about putting this thing together! I did make that trip to Lowe's earlier today and bought some more stuff: "desk" grommets for cable routing, a couple of medium duty extension cords, a power strip that I'll be cutting the end off of to hard wire to the AC inlet, primer and paint to match my axe, and a latch for the bottom (I'm gonna put a hinge on it!) I also bought a couple of chrome ended "amp" handles to attach to the top along w/some white piping from the same seller on Ebay. Now all I have left to get is the Velcro and some rubber feet and I'll be set! Is there anything I'm leaving out?? Hope not, but probably so....

Re: So I've decided to build a pedalboard....

Sounds great ISO. I got the rubber feet at HD they were cheap. The Velcro was kinda expensive. I paid 25.00 for the set. It came with enough to cover my board and then some. It really is I dustrial strength. The adheasive on the back would pick up a truck.

Oh yeah I forgot to mention. I just bought the BBE Supa Charger on eBay new in box shipped for 100.00 thought that was a good price.

Re: So I've decided to build a pedalboard....

That's awesome about the Supa-Charger geo! Out of all of the power supplies I've looked at I've pretty much settled on the BBE. I've been a big fan of anything I've ever tried of theirs. Top notch stuff! My plan is to eventually pick one up as well, but I've spent WAY too much dough on this little project of mine, along with some tube upgrades in my amp lately, so it'll have to wait for right now. For the moment I'm just gonna hardwire a power strip to the "front" wall of my pedalboard and plug in my One Spot adapter to it. I went ahead and ordered two of the AC inlets and figured I'd install both for if and when I get the Supa-Charger. That way I can still plug a "strange" power supply (18 volt??) into the power strip if need be.

As far as the velcro goes, I've decided to go w/the same guy you bought yours from. The only problem is with my board being 18" deep x 27" wide I need approximately 11' 3" of velcro, and he only sells it in 10' 6" rolls. I sent him a question to see if he could throw in an extra foot, so hopefully he'll get back to me soon on that?

Looks like my ducks are in a row, as they say! Hopefully it'll turn out well!

Re: So I've decided to build a pedalboard....

I think the Supa Charger does 18 volts. Oh and I have an extra couple of feet of the Velcro you can have it just email me you address and I will mail it to ya. It is the 4 inch Velcro.

it does do 18 volts. you just combine two of the 9v power taps. there is a cable sold seperately that allows you to do this.

Re: So I've decided to build a pedalboard....

Well this whole pedalboard thing has been a slow process, but I FINALLY have a couple of pictures of the raw frame now!

I've decided against covering the entire top with velcro (mostly due to the fact that I love the grain of the birch that I've used!) I do have the neutrik jacks on hand (4 of 'em) and will be drilling the holes in the sides of the board for those in the next day or two hopefully as well as a couple of holes for the recessed power outlets (2). The reason I'm doing 2 of those is so I can wire a power strip to one and mount it on the inner wall, and for the other I plan on eventually getting the BBE Supa Charger power supply wired up.

As you can see, I'm planning on adding several pedals to my rig in the near future (hence the empty space!) Right now the big ones I'm looking at are either a MXR script logo phase 90 or a EH Small Stone Phaser. Maybe an OD, Wah, and Volume pedal before it's all said and done, and I should still have room for some other crap if I want!

I'll try to upload pics as I go through each step of the building process just for kicks! Hopefully I can get this thing done before Christmas!

Re: So I've decided to build a pedalboard....

Thanks man! I built the thing more for fun than practicality, because I don't really "need" it, but in all reality none of us really "need" all of these goodies that we love so much! The only thing I need now (other than more pedals to fill it with!) is either some sort of case or gig bag for it, which will probably cost me more than it cost me to build the board! Oh well! Either way I'm still pumped about it!

Drop the velcro, go for a plastic surface and use 3M's Dual Lock.

I'm happy with the velcro....it's the "industrial grade" (whatever that means) velcro that Lyt pedalboards uses on theirs and it's quite possibly the strongest velcro I've ever encountered, lol!

Well I googled the dual lock stuff, and it looks like it would've definitely been a better option! Oh well....live and learn I guess!

Re: So I've decided to build a pedalboard....

I know, my previous pedalboard had the industrial velcro but after a while the pedals got loose and you couldn't carry the thing arond without dropping one of them.

I knew about the Dual Lock when a friend of mine ordered a board from Kriz Kraft, He mentioned the problem to them and they suggested to apply a really thin plastic surface to the board (just like the one that's on the outside of their flight cases) and use Dual Lock to fix the pedals. Once I saw It I ordered a new board and never looked back LOL you can practically lift the board by holding the pedals.

The downside is that reorganizing the pedals is a pain in the neck cause you have to remove the Dual Lock that remains on the board from the pedal you got out, and since the things sticks to the board with glue foam you have to use some alcohol to get it off. Minor inconvenience if you want the board and peadals to be "as one".
