My neighbor across the hall has this, but I've never seen one before.

It's freaky, isn't it?

Weird. Same headstock as the Explorer.. body shape looks like an Ibanez or something.

Oh I guess that is the regular DC bodystyle... but with the Explorer neck? weirdness.

Re: duhh... what kinda Gib is this?

Does anyone know what model this is, or even if it was a production item? It doesn't resemble the M series, or any other Gibby I'm familiar with.

What's with the mini-toggles, and the Kahler whammy?

Re: duhh... what kinda Gib is this?

OK, spent most of the last half-hour Googling for info.

It's a Spirit II XPL, and it was the main ax of Chris Hayes (Huey Lewis & The News). It was the supposed answer to the superstrat, but never sold well.

Re: duhh... what kinda Gib is this?

GIbson put the explorer neck on just about everything in the early 80s and put XPL a the end of the name. I have a Flying V XPL. They even put that neck on the regular LP body style. Yuck.

That's not necessarily a Spirit. It might also be the "Double Cutaway XPL".

Re: duhh... what kinda Gib is this?

Chris Hayes used a double humbucker Spirit XPL but I don't think the red one is a Spirit. As I remember the spirit had the classic LP Junior dc chape, and with the binding they looked like Hamer Sunburst, which by the way is a great guitar.

I have to admit I really like Huey & the News...

Love the dumbell off to the side, with the axes in the one pic.

+1 on "The News". They were great. FWIW, Hayes DID play Hamers for a time in the early/mid 80's. I had an early 80's red Sunburst. Great guitar.

Re: duhh... what kinda Gib is this?

I had one of the LP XPLs with the 2 humbuckers. It was a great guitar (especially for the $400 I got it for). Tim Shaw PAFs (although the bridge had been swapped for a Duncan SD), bound ebony board and a Kahler.

I also have one of the "Yuck" single cut LPs with explorer headstock. These were never a regular production run though. It was a custom shop run of around 10 guitars, and this one sounds and plays great.
