So I've been talking about building a 72' Deluxe... Here is my ideas!

I started crunching some numbers today, and figured out it will be a tangible thing! If not a lot cheaper than I figured! I cannot find a Tele like I want off the shelf. Or that isn't an actual 1972 Telecaster Deluxe, so I figure... I'm just gonna build what I really want. I know if I put all the work into this, I absolutely WILL NOT feel the need to sell it down the road haha (I am TERRIBLE about that... Case in point, BOTH of my previous Telecasters haha).

Basically, this very guitar is the inspiration.

Mine is going to be a little different.

What I'm going to do SEEMS fairly simple. I'm going get the body and neck from Warmoth. Body is going to be swamp ash (like a tele should be!) and the neck is going to be a birds-eye maple "Warmoth Pro" with the big headstock. Abalone dots would just be the icing on the cake. Idk if I am going to go with a pearloid or black pick-guard. Maybe I'll get both and change them as I please.

My favorite thing about my Teles that I have had have been of course the Tele twang and the finish of my G&L. If you have ever seen a clear orange G&L in person... You know why I am doing my 72' in that finish! On the neck I am going to have warmoth do they're "vintage tint" clear coat. I haven't had a finished Tele neck and although I really liked that about my Tele's... That vintage tint just looks too good to pass up. My LP's have all had finished necks, so I'm sure this one will be fine.

Hardware wise, so far I have decided on chrome Schaller min-locking tuners and 3-saddle bridge with brass saddles. Come to think, I amy also go for the normal bridge for a 72'D, that might be all that would work. The pick-ups are what are going to be hard for this, because I want something kind of obscure. Basically I want the guitar to LOOK like it has the stock Fender humbucker pick-ups in it... But, I want the bridge to be a single-coil. Maybe even a P90-ish single-coil and the neck to be the normal humbucker. Nice pots/caps, etc... I want the electronics on this thing to be SUPER nice.

All in all... Getting the body, neck, finish for both neck&body, pick-guard, tuners, bridge, knobs... Basically everything except the electronics from Warmoth, the total was around $750 before tax. I figure pick-ups and electronics would be maybe $300 more (or more depending upon what all it costs. I have no idea about the bridge pick-up!). So... around $1,000 for the 72' Telecaster of my dreams and the experience of building a nice guitar from the ground up? ...Not a bad deal in my eyes.

Anyways, essentially these are the small and big ideas I have for this. I have been wanting a 72' Tele for a long time now. So I figure the best thing to do is to get the plan in action! I'd really love to hear what some people have to say about Warmoth products and finishing ESPECIALLY. I also would like to hear any and every idea about this!

My goal is to acquire ALL the parts and to have this completed by October 2009

Also, it looks like I can get the body routed with Gibson spacing...

sounds great, thats what warmoth is all about. create your dream axe for a moderate price

btw the last time I saw Buddy Guy play he used that same tele. damn thing sang like an angel

like CS said stick to the higher end options and youll be fine and have one great axe.

fwiw, just my opioin i would not go with a P-90 in the bridge.
youd want something a lil mellow there. stick the P-90 in the neck. just my .002 cents

I think wood wise, I am going to be all right. Swamp ash sounded AMAZING with my G&L, much more resonant and warm than say the Highway-One that I had that was made of alder.

Honestly pick-up wise, I might just go for stock Fender humbucker for a little bit. And then eventually have a humbucker sized single-coil made for it (because of the Fender sizing idk exactly what I would be able to put in there).

The re-issue is not gonna cut it my friend.

The only Tele that can full-fill my desires is the brettk7 edition Tele Deluxe.

Does anybody have some suggestions for the neck wire, etc?

Whatever you say, Captain Emo.

It does sound like a cool cool project... I passed on that RI myself, just because I don't like 'buckers in my Tele.

Hope this year long project does ya some good.... don't get miffed halfway through it and sell it.

I KNOW! If I had that and my blood sweat and tears went into it, I wouldn't ever sell it. I have wanted that very guitar since before I even played guitar (along with a Les Paul Custom... And you know that hasn't my side, well it did once... haha).

Like I said, I want Tele twang, so I WILL have a bridge pick-up to accommodate that.
