Couple of general technique questions...
Ok I've got a couple of questions for you..
Q1. On most songs when I'm plugged into my amp/pod and I change between frets I always get a screeching sort of noise. it's basically the noise of my hand/fingers moving up/down the fretboard. is there any way of stopping this (other than taking my hand of the neck when moving around)?? I noticed on other videos people don't look like they're taking their hands off but you don't hear the same noise that I get. Q2. Check out the video in the link below. At the 41 second mark just before the main riff kicks in there's a slide bit which I'm having trouble reproducing. The tab that I have shows this part as a muted (x) slide. Can anyone suggest how to reproduce the same sound as my slide sounds nothing like the one in the video or the original song. cheers in advance for this |

Re: Couple of general technique questions...
At the end of the leads, he's holding the note and sliding quickly down the neck, followed immediately by a long pick slide. (Turn the pick perpendicular to the strings and run it down the wound strings...the grooves in the string are caught by the sharp edge of the pick...cool sound. It WILL eat grooves into a thin pick, however.)
One thing that makes it confusing is the recording playing behind him--it makes it difficult to discern Tom Sholtz' playing from his. I usually just do a double pick slide down the low E string. ![]() BB

Re: Couple of general technique questions...
If your gain is set high you will get a lot more noise from moving position on the fretboard. Make sure you are muting the strings with your right hand when you shift position. You could try a noise gate/filter but I don't like them myself. It takes a lot of tone away.

Re: Couple of general technique questions...
I "think" the noise you get when changing frets is from loud pickups. Example: I have a couple Squires that I hardly ever play, they play and sound pretty good actually but there is that pickup noise that I hear when doing changes that are not there on my other guitars.

Re: Couple of general technique questions...
from the sound of it i'm sure it's the pickups.
would you say it's possible to adjust the gain settings/volume etc to cut down the noise? i bet my tone/gain/volume settings are to high? |

Re: Couple of general technique questions...
It is certainly worth playing with your amp settings. A lot of treble and a lot of gain will increase noise on your strings. Have a fiddle and let us know the results.

Re: Couple of general technique questions...
cheers for your help chaps.
I'll have a look at my settings tonight and report back. I thought something must be wrong as I never hear the sound of moving between frets on any recordings or any other videos. |

Also, I think the unwieldy strings sticking out every which way helps the tone also. Are people really that lazy?

Re: Couple of general technique questions...
Some people like the sound of the fingers screeching along the strings. In classical guitar this is a big no-no. I'm not trying to sound like a purist, but if it bothers you then just work with picking your fingers up when changing chord structures. At first is seems daunting, but its actually a quick fix, and it will make your fingers work fast for changes.
