55 Junior - frets and first rehearsal...

Went out to rehearse with a band today, took along the '55 Junior with the new frets and rattling truss-rod as a spare guitar. Picked it up about an hour in, played it for the next 3 hours.

Why aren't pots and tone caps as well tapered and responsive in modern guitars? Why can I get such amazing tonal variation just from the way I play it? Why do pinched harmonics SCREAM when I want them to? Why does it sound this good? Starting to feel like a friend now...we're bonding...

My first real experience of a 50s Les Paul. I think they might become popular!

Mmmmm.... You guys and your 50's Juniors.

My next LP will be a vintage Junior - I just need some time to gather up the cash!

So, what did Brian do about the truss rod in the end?

The tone pot in my Schecter is an absolute joke. It is literally on/off. Does absolutely nothing until you turn it a hair from all the way down, then it just cuts off the top half of the tone!

He hasn't yet. Been really busy for the last few weeks, but have spoken to him today, and he's going to drill and glue it on Wednesday. Have persuaded him to do it while I wait, as I get separation anxiety with the Junior now...

Re: 55 Junior - frets and first rehearsal...

Went to see Brian today. He was really surprised how much the truss rod rattled. Reckoned it was pretty well unheard of in his experience, much the same as all the experienced luthiers round here said when I suggested it might be the TR.

Popped out the markers for frets 5 and 7. Drilled down into the cavity. Filled with araldite whilst warming the neck to make the araldite run more easily.

I waited until this evening before tensioning the rod back up again. No longer rattles, adjusts perfectly, I'm one happy Junior player...

Jeggz...where? I have no money, but would love to take a look...

Further news, the '55 got its first live outing in Birmingham (not in Alabama) last night. No photos or recordings that I know of, but played it through my Blackface Princeton Reverb and it sounded awesome. Normally use a Rosewood JV Squier Strat for quiet gigs, but the old Junior did all I could have wanted and more. I'm becoming extremely attached to the old girl!
