Your Thumb, do you use it?

I have small hands, therefore i have not the span to realy use my thumb to fret notes (although some times lately it does happen). However I have always used it to deaden bottom E.

I think my playing is developing subconsciously.

What is the general concensus on the thumb thing?

Re: Your Thumb, do you use it?

I sometimes use it to fret the 6th and mute the 5th. It took me some time to get use to it, but it is handy for some tunes...

Re: Your Thumb, do you use it?

On a skinny SG neck, I can get around the neck....

But on a big neck(which I prefer), my elfin hands are not very big...

On Stevie's guitar, I do okay....

Bole doesn't use his thumb (even though he has freakishly big hands and long fingers - his hand is just about the same size as my foot ).

Of course it is.

I'm a hard strummer and use mine a lot to mute the 6th and 5th strings.

I have heard a few people say that Angus Young uses his thumb quite often. Not sure if he really does or not though. You can when playing highway to hell, its good practice if you want to start playing that way.

It must be something in the water round here, on anything othe than ultra skinny necks Ive no chance of reaching the E with my thumb...

Re: Your Thumb, do you use it?

I can easily fret or mute both the E and A strings with my thumb on every guitar I've ever played, so, hell yeah, I use it.

But, I'd use my toes too, if they were fast enough.

Yes, I do. It is very necessary to use the thumb to give the Bultaco salute!

Beautiful Hamers! I had a Sunburst back in the early 80's. Back on topic...I do use my thumb on a song or two but it's not very comfy.

Re: Your Thumb, do you use it?

My wife tried to use her thumb one time. I slapped her silly, she never tried it again.

Re: Your Thumb, do you use it?

Oh the Pain, the pain.....! If I use my thumb for anything like fret wrapping, my hand is crippled for hours. Too many sprains over the years. Life get back atchya when you rebuild car engines and drive crappy cars through New England winters

Now days you cannot fix your cars when they die, but they die less often too. So I'm trying to keep my hands in working order, but they are feeling their age at times.

Mechanical repair is now a playtime thing for me, bot a matter of survival, so my hands are no longer put through the abuse they once were.
Still, my thumb has limited use on a guitar neck, but many uses elsewhere.........

Re: Your Thumb, do you use it?

On a serious note, I can remember watching my Mom play her (now my) J-45 and she always played a "cheater" G chord using her thumb. Those are some cool memories. My Mom and Dad used to pack the house down at Tootsies Orchid lounge and a couple other clubs in Nashville. I remember when Tootsies closed the doors (they are open again now). My parents were out of work, Hero to zero over night.
