Clapton's Beano Burst

Hey Brothers! i was wondering does anyone have a clear picture of Claptons Beano Burst? did it had a plain top or did it have flame top? I can't tell from the pictures that i have seen.
Cheers!

Re: Clapton's Beano Burst

From most of the photos I've seen, it's pretty plain.

Re: Clapton's Beano Burst

i believe it was 60s les paul, if i´m not mistaken

clapton AND peter green talked about how slim the neck of claptons les paul was-and i eman even the R8 or R9 with the slimmest neck is definitely not like a 60s
on the other hand: weren´t there different kobs (ususally) on the 60s ????

Re: Clapton's Beano Burst

yeah brimay
the reflector knobs-though clapton bought this guitar 2nd hand so the pre-owner might have changed them-then again back in the day(which was the mid 60s ) i doubt that they did all that swapping
the vintage market wasn´t really developed and clapton got all his gear dirt cheap in comparison to nowadays prices(even when considering all the changes in income and econonmy et al)

Re: Clapton's Beano Burst

Gibson could have used leftover bell type knobs in 1960 for some guitars....

The Les Paul changes didn't happen on Jan.1 of each year -- It wasn't like today where they decide on changes for "next year's" model. There are plenty of overlap in specs between the years, such as small fret '59s, big fret 58s, big neck 60s, etc. The reflector knobs and fade resistant tomato soup bursting did not appear until towards mid 1960, which is also when the slim taper necks became more common (but NOT universal!).

We can only speculate as to what year the Beano burst was/is. Clapton claims that it was a narrow neck, but that doesn't really mean much. At the most we can guess that it was either a late '59 or early '60 due to the top hats, tailpiece position and doublewhite neck pup (making the relatively safe assumption that the pups and knobs are original to the guitar).

Regarding the figuring of the top, pictures can be very misleading. I've seen photos of uber-bursts that appear to be plain tops -- so much depends on lighting, angles, and the quality of the photo.

The bottom line is that we really don't know much about that magical guitar

Re: Clapton's Beano Burst

Peter Green said the neck on Eric's was much slimmer than his neck on his `59. Reflectors were used hit and miss after serial # 0 7100, which is fairly late in `60. Gibson always used up whatever they had in-stock before using new items and with any thing in production, there are lap-overs. One guys bench may have reflectors and the other guy may have bell knobs. All depended on who did the final assembly. Changes were not instituted immediately, but phased in.

Are there any color pictures of the Beano Burst? I'd love to know how bright that top was.

Re: Clapton's Beano Burst

A lot of scenarios could have happened with the knobs. EC might have preferred the bell knobs. Or, might have broken one removing it and replaced them all. Or, as above, they might have come stock. Who knows?

No there are no known colour pics of the beano burst. And those top hat knobs you can pretty much assume were original to the LP which would make it a pre mid '60 guitar.

Re: Clapton's Beano Burst

EC has said in more than one interview that it was a '60. I don't think they even know what the S/N was.
It certainly was "Magic" while it was around.

Re: Clapton's Beano Burst

I think someone should start a NATIONAL WORLD WIDE search for the Beano Les Paul and make like a public group somewhere and somehow.
Yes I am serious

Oh and thank you to the guy who got this picture! I have decided to use it as my avatar if you guys dont mind?

Re: Clapton's Beano Burst

I'm sure whoever has the Beano burst probley has no idea what they even own, more then likely it was stolen and sold and sold again many times, anything else seems unlikely to me. For all we know some collector has it and has no idea! Or it could be sitting in a basement or could have broken the very night it was stolen in a car accident or something...The world will never know!

I don't think it would have changed hands much at all if it's intact. once or twice until they started to become harder to find. And if it ended up in the hands of someone who DID know what it was, then it won't be seen again in public.

well it could have changed hands alot it was stolen in the 60's and Burst's I don't think gained ALOT of value till the 90's or late 80's. Who knows the guy could have pawned it and someone bought it with no idea of what it was and the real owner still doesn't know! Is there anything that could let someone who owns a burst know if they own this famous LP?
