My latest Les Paul

Bought me a Custom 68/69. One piece body/neck. Its a player but it realy plays..

Here it takes a rest on my Marshall Super lead stack from 1969. Both the amp and the cab is also from 1969. The amp has been with Whitesnake.

So you can say Gibson Marshall 1969x3

Figured I'd put your picture up on the page

Re: My latest Les Paul

Wow what a lovely picture!! All that vintage, tres cool! Congrats man!

One question though... is it just me or does the headstock shape look a bit off? It's like the bindings are too wide, the tips at the top don't point up very much, the logo is pretty low, the washers of the tuners overlap the binding. Or is it some sort of transitional headstock shape? Could be just the camera angle though, I'm really no vintage expert.

Here I made some comparisson pics just for fun:

Re: My latest Les Paul

That's the first thing that came to my attention. I had a deal going on last year for a similar guitar, and it had the tri binding redone on the headstock. It appears to have had the same done on this guitar too. But the logo is correct for that year and the diamond inlays.

Re: My latest Les Paul

I have noticed slight nuances with different Customs on the headstock binding.I believe some of it would have to do with final sanding and binding scraping.

my early '69...

Re: My latest Les Paul

Believe me. That has worried me. It may have some works done on the head but in the meantime as one xpert says to me: Many strange Gibsons LP left the factory theese years. He said it could be bindings from the L5 series, while they where in process of making the LP customs new line.

Re: My latest Les Paul

Looks like it has been scraped / repaired on both sides to me. I have never seen wide binding like that on a Custom. I have seen a lot of Customs. But there is always the rare one that surprises me. So I can not say for sure other than that it looks like it has been repaired. Also, the truss rod cover does not look right. But it could be the flash.

Are you sure it is a 1969 model? I thought they did not start using that logo with the closed lettering until mid-late 1970. I have an early 1970 model with open lettering (open o and open b). I may have seen that logo on a late 69 gold top, but never on a pre-1970 Custom. What are the codes on the pots? 137YYWW? YY = year the pots were made and WW = the week that the pots were made. 3 piece neck? pancake body? Volute? Hard to tell from the pics, but it looks like it might have a tiny volute. What are the first 3 digits of the serial number?

The serial is 536***, no volute, no made in usa. The pots are 1376902,1376901. Sending some pics on the trussrod hole. As you see it looks like it had been done after the headstock was redy. The neck is one piece and the body is one piece.

That serial is earlier than any other 1969 Custom listed on atomeve's web site. And the next closest 69 model (538***, although 530*** would be the earliest & is not listed on that site at this time) also has closed lettering in the logo.

Hmmm. Oh well, like I said, there are always surprises / exceptions. Do you have a pic of the inside of the control cavity on the back?

69 pots could have been in LP's up to 71 or so. Not always a great indicator of year. That logo came about in 70. It's a three piece neck and should be a pancake. I have never seen a logo like that without it being a three piece neck. More likely if the binding was done, so was the finish. That binding doesn't look Gibbo.

That first guitar - the SG has open lettering with a dot above the i. It is a different logo than yours - it has the older 1960s logo. And although the second guitar has your logo, it looks like a 1970-71 model. The ad says "circa" 1969 which means it was made sometime around 1969. That is an excuse for not taking the time to know or maybe there is no definitive way to know the exact year. The third guitar has your logo with a rare dot above the i. But he offers no proof that the guitar is indeed a 1969 model. So none of the guitars you have presented offer any proof that your logo was ever used in 1969. I am not saying it wasn't. But from most of what I have heard and seen, it wasn't invented until 1970. But I suppose it could be possible that it was invented in late 69 with a few late 69 guitars getting it during the transition & many early 1970 guitars still sporting the older logo as well.
