Re: looking for some beginner solos to learn

I've said this one a million times, I do apologize, but Baba O'Riley by the Who is nice and easy...its more about that timing, although even that's pretty simple. Just remember though, 'beginner' is a sugestive word, what's easy for someone else may not be easy for you. I wish you luck!

Re: looking for some beginner solos to learn

the short little solo part of led zeppelin's living loving maid is a good one to start with, short and fun, also really cool sounding! that song in general is a great starting place for budding guitarist in general as well

Try the first solo in "Comfortably Numb." It's tasty and fairly easy!

Slash's first solo on Knockin' on Heaven's Door is fairly simple.

I agree. Underrated song. Probably because of the lyrical content. Interesting mix, too.

The notes themselves are simple, but Gilmore's execution is not 'beginner'.

5. Cross Roads Solo, Cream/Clapton A?? That what I do it in..lol
6. As Much of Red House by Jimi Hendrix as you can handle minor/major licks
7. Living after midnight by Judas Priest has a Cool solo E major pentatonic
8. Live version in E of Cocaine Clapton and Albert Lee I think it is Trade off solos...
9. Jimi Hendrix All Along the Watcher Tower has a lot of nice minor runs

Re: looking for some beginner solos to learn

Actually, if you like Pink Floyd, the second solo in Comfortably Numb is not a bad one to learn. At least the beginning of it. It’s mostly pentatonic minor in B, and just about all of it is at the 7th position. It changes and goes way up the neck later, but the first part is full of nice, meat and potatoes blues licks, including a standard descending run in triplets that he uses several times.

The solo from Young Lust is a beauty, too. It’s in E this time, and it’s got quite a little collection of double stops that you’d otherwise have to listen to lots of Keith Richards to hear. It also modulates to G major underneath the solo, giving you a nice little demonstration of relative minors (i.e., you are playing the solo on the E pentatonic minor, then the rhythm changes key and starts crunching along on a shuffle in G, and it sounds GOOD!).

The first couple of licks from the solo of Whole Lotta Love are classic blues lines that you can hear everywhere, but never quite so clearly as Pagey plays them here.

The Angus Young solo to Highway To Hell is another ripper with some nice rock’n’roll touches. It’s also got a mean little double stop at the end of the intro figure: Chuck Berry straight into Keef. Magic.

The other thing with all of these is to learn them, then get comfortable with them. Then incorporate parts of them that you like into your bag of tricks. Then – and this is the bit most people forget to do - go back and have another listen. You’ll find little bits and pieces that you missed, or emphasized differently. This is good. You now pick them up, and add them to your repertoire.

Even more importantly, when you go back to them later, don’t worry about the notes being played. You already know that. Instead, listen really closely to HOW it’s being played. Soft or hard? Which pick up? Tone up or down? Where’s his right hand? Does he, like Dave Gilmore, do a lot of percussive stuff before and after the main lines? Quite often it’s this stuff that makes it sound so good, and so authoritative.

That list of Jonesy’s is a good ‘un, too.

cheers,
Splat

Check out these reissues of Pete Townsend's Les Paul Deluxes! Heavily modified, of course!

I always liked the classic Suzy Q by Creedance...

Neat riff, classic 60's solo.

I cannot argue about Gilmore's execution! I saw Pink Floyd live on their Dogs of War tour. Gilmore absolutely SMOKED!!!!
If that solo is a KEY for other guys to grow on the electric guitar, then so be it!.... in the most humble and positive context.

One right note with feeling, is better than 10 notes that don't belong...

Gilomour's solo on "Mother" is a lesson in bending and major key tastiness.

Just stay away from that second solo lol.

You might struggle with the phrasing or key/timing/emotion that Gilmour is somehow able to pour into the guitar.

You will able to play, but you won't be able to "play" it; but that comes with time IMO.
