I've tried them with 9V and with 18V and I can't hear a damned bit of difference. But it doesn't hurt and who knows, there may be that one person out in the audience that has bat-sized pinnae and an oversized eighth cranial nerve who can distinguish a difference after it's run through a couple of muddied-bottom/beaming treble 4x12s and placed into the atmosphere next to cookie-monster vocals and 600 watts of bass guitar. As to whether it's an improvement or not -- that's a whole 'nother story.
