If you're careful the worst you can do is goop it up with solder and have to get someone to redo it.
Buy some cheapie pots from radio shack (or get some freebies from a buddy or a tech) and practice.
I'm a newb at it myself, and am finishing wiring some EMG pickups into a buddies Ibanez tonight.
