If you're using an effects pedal (i.e. metal master, landmine), use the mixer out (if the pedal has the option).. otherwise, you mic the cab. Placement varies, though... I've seen and done it in the middle of a cab, in one corner and in another.

Recording software is important as well.. you can make up for some placement mistake (like if you get very impatient and just record away after setting the mic up for 2 hours). Adobe Audition all the way!
