The StewMac shafts will pull apart like that too if your not carefull. ( don't ask me how I kmow! ) I just ebayed some CTS pots and installed them in my Epi. Like everything these days, they don't make 'em like they used to. Look at photos of vintage LP's, those pots were built to last a lifetime. The Epi LP is a good guitar, tweak the hardware a little and they're as stout as a Gibson. New pots will raise the control knobs off the body a bit making them easier to grab. I junked the stock knobs also.
