Try putting some fresh strings on it, that would be a start...

As long as there are no major flaws in it's construction, I'd be astonished if you couldn't get it to sound and play decently at least. Set-up, pickups, wiring.. Gotta get you close.
It's fair to say that sometimes you come across a guitar that has some extra mystery ingredient that makes it great. But I believe that if the fundamentals are right, any guitar can be made to do the job.
On a final note, who decides if your Les Paul stinks? If you like it and other people who have played it like it, seems to me it doesn't stink...
