Using a gainy pedal with a gainy amp can sound spectacular, but there's a bit of work involved in keeping everything under control. I tend to have a Muff, RAT or Tonebender wound right up in my setup, but most people that try to use my rig suffer a lot of feedback, noise and "splat" as yawny so effectively names it.

I'm just used to having a few settings like that, so I tend to be damping the strings and standing in the right place to control the whistle from the pickups.

I'm guessing Dan Auerbach does the same.
