I think you missed my point. I did not mean that I thought you were going at your build blindly. but rather you can't measure acuratly unless you know the reason you need a specific measurement. Knowing the reasons why allows you accuratly adjust to what you have at hand rather than just following written instructions that do not take into concideration any build up of tolerance of the assembled parts. By understanding the whys you can adjust for many previous errors of manufacturing tolerance build ups.
