Swapping pickups will alter a guitar totally. Not just sonically.
Sometimes just swapping pots will increase the potential to a great extend.

I have had this feeling a long time ago too. I got myself the cheapest guitar I could find.
That guitar happened to be a Behringer El Toro. Which truly an awful guitar.

But ripping out the electronics and putting in some older Schaller golden 50's humbuckers made that guitar have a real good tone.

So just for experimenting it might be a good choice.

You can also just get a better guitar, like the PRS SE line and have a guitar tech put in new pickups and something I personally like, a mini switch to bypass volume/tone pots in total. This can really open up your tone.
