I'm starting to think this guitar may be a 1963, not a 61.

Tom Wittrock mentioned at LPF that this guitar which was featured in Robb Lawrence's book was noted as having a 6 digit serial number. Six digit numbers did not start until 63. This guitar also has the 4th screw in the pickguard next to the bridge pickup. Not sure about Customs but I know that screw didn't appear until 63 on the Standards. The heel looks a little larger and more rounded than typical heels from 61. Just because its a smooth heel doesn't guarantee 61, there were some in 62 and 63 as well.
