Re: The 1959 Les Paul Debate ...What made them So Great ?

I think the MAIN reason '50 bursts are so expensive and treasured is the stars that played them, and subsequently ran the prices up.
They are GREAT guitars, had the pleasure of owning one....but at the same time, all my '50s Lesters have had that same tonal/playabilty vibe.My current '55 conversion rivals my burst in tone and playability (not eye candy!).Gibson just made great guitars out of great wood back then.No one was saying "This is a sunburst-----let's make it play and sound better than that goldtop."

Sorry---------I've played some so-so bursts (and good ones) and some great goldtops/conversions (and some so-so ones!).It all equals out. It's about Gibson craftsmanship back then. The '58-60 Standards are the epitome of tone, playability, and eye candy.......but I've gotten all but the latter in other '50s Pauls.
