Its because the producer was a douche bag. Still a pretty good album though.

Anything pre-Elder will do you well. Definately pick up the Ace album as well as Paul's album. Its pretty good and has a bunch of stuff that they did live as well as what Paul has done on his solo tours.
Just remember that no matter what album you pick up the members of that lineup have huge influence over what the album sounds like. For example, anything with Eric Carr and Vinnie will sound a bit more metal than the previous lineup. Anything with Bruce will tend to be more hairband except for maybe Carnival of Souls. The current lineup is somewhat of a throwback to the early band but is still very distinct as to its overall muscial sound.
Congrats on discovering a band that is very very under appreciated.
