Steve, search is your friend on this as there is an endless amount of info on id'ing historics.
The serial number should match an authentic LP, format 8 XXXX, with the first X being the last digit of the year of manufacture. 8 8001 would be an R8 made in 2008 or 1998. 1800 euro is not an unreasonable price for an R8 plain top. So neither of your clues would mean it's a fake. Check the control cavity for an R8 stamp. There's lots of pictures on the site that would show it.
Pictures are key and there are some obvious tells on most of the fakes. However, I've seen guys on the forum go after "fake" ebay sales that in the end are real, so take everything with a grain of salt. There are guys on here who are genuine experts and you'll most likely figure that out. I'm not, just trying to help out.
