a) The same things that make boutique-anything so expensive. In essence, lack of mass production.
b) The same things that would make you want to buy boutique-anything. Rarity, better components (maybe), unique design (maybe), special relationship with the builder (maybe), bragging rights. Primarily, the latter. How could anything you spent so much money for not be better?
That just wouldn't make sense.
Gibson Custom guitars are pretty much in the same category. Due to an informal social contract between owners thereof, they depreciate less and sometimes even appreciate in value. That doesn't happen with mass-produced, budget-priced goods. Until they cease production of a quality example and 99% of them go in the dumpster. Then you wind up with $4,000 Melody Makers and $15,000 Juniors.
