I use a Presonus Firebox which I plug my mics and direct 1/4" jacks into in order to record directly to my hard drive.

That is the only way I know of to record a file directly to my PC.
The Firebox connects via the firewire port on the PC not via a soundcard. The sound processing is done in the Fireport box, turned into digital and then streamed into the PC.

The Line 6 PodXT can be connected to the PC via USB and doesn't need a soundcard either, but probably needs some software like Gearbox or something like it to get sounds into a recording software like Cubase or Pro Tools etc...

For a conventional analogue signals like from a microphone or line out from an amp, it must first be routed into something that has a pre-amp and an analogue to digital converter (or ADC) in it. The digitised sound is then available via the PCI bus inside the computer for software packags like Cubase or Sound Recorder to use

Cheers!
