I have found what works the best for me is 0000 steel wool, lightly. Just a few passes at a time. Then I spray some finger-ease on the back of the neck and rub it back and forth until it is nice and smooth, soft, and fast. There have been some guitars that I have had to do this to several times to get just right. Remember there is no going back after you have done it though. YMMV.
