Its the driver in the neck pick-up, more or less it is a magnet that vibrates the strings like a ebow..It has its own gain knob and three settings and can be turned on or off no matter what position the 5 way switch is in. the 1st toggle turns it on and off..the 2nd toggle is the three settings ( Normal , Mixed , Harmonic)
