after I finally broke down and bought a Hotplate (due to the discussions on this forum) for my JCM800, I am in amp heaven. I haven't used an overdrive pedal since.
Maybe 1/2 way on the pre, about 7 on the volume, and I can go from clean or crunch rhythm to marshall OT overdrive with my volume knob.

but, that's the tone my ears have been looking for forever, every one is chasing different tones.

IMO however, if you are going to use tubes, get the OTs warmed up. Keep the wattage down so you can turn it up. Or, go the attenuator route.
