Check the action first to make sure it isn't set too low. Then you need to fret the Low E-string on the first fret with your left hand. You then take your right hand and use your pinky to fret the last fret on the Low E-string. While holding your pinky down on the last fret, stretch your index finger as much as you can to try and fret one more fret towards the 7th fret. Now look at the distance between the E-string and the fret between the 1st fret and the 7th fret. There should be a gap. If the string is touching the frets, you will need to relieve the neck by turning the truss rod counter-clockwise. A little turn will do the job!
