a good deal is a good deal. i dont like taking people for a ride, so i try to get a good deal AND be fair. if the guy is asking $3k for a nice looking/condition R9, i wont be insulting and lowball him (i hate it when people do it to me). like you, i dont want to take advantage of someone's misfortune.
I've even bought a guitar before from a guy who was in dire need of cash and offered to a) sell it back to him in the future or b) offer him 1st dibs if i decided to sell it.
