in my practice, below are the definitions i use with patients regarding a "want" versus a "need."
"want" – a preference, something desired but not essential to one's saftey or sense of well-being, optional, additive, negotiable.
"need" – essential to one's saftey (i.e., physical, psychological, emotional) or sense of well-being, non-negotiable, a fixed requirement, the maintenance of is critical.
clearly, based on the above definitions, there is a stringent difference between the two – which is not to rule out obtaining what one wants provided one's needs are met first and/or not at the detriment of another.
sentry, an excellent "decision making" methodology which could be applied to just about anything.
