I agree completely - worry about the stuff that you CAN'T upgrade before you worry about electronics and all of that. Once you've narrowed it down, plug in your favorites!
I don't even plug in a guitar until I'm reasonably sure I'm going to buy it. The variation between electronic components in Epiphones are much smaller than the variation in woods and construction.
